DP Elections:4 Candidates To Challenge Norbert Mao For Party Leadership

So far five (5) have either declared candidacies for the President General of the Democratic Party or have begun de facto campaigns with the establishment of campaign committees.

Others have said they are considering running and have been holding campaign-style events in some parts of the country.

Hon. Norbert Mao
He is 53 years old man, 6th Democratic Party President General, is running for re-election. Mao won first-in-the Mbale DP National Delegates Conference in 2010 by over 70 – percent margin over the former Mayor of Kampala, Al-hajji Nasser Ntege Ssebagala.

Mao won re-elections in 2015 at Katomi DP National Delegates Conference by over 60 percent this time over former MP – Buikwe South, Hon. Dr. Micheal Lulume Bayiga.

He is 50 years, after months of deliberation, former MP – Buikwe South constituency, also Shadow minister for Health in the 9th Uganda Parliament announced his decision to run for the party President of the party for the second time, answering one of the biggest questions.
The announcement came in from a closed door meeting with his close and confidant political friends. Lulume rebuked the way the Mao administration has continued usurping powers of various party elected officials at the NEC including the office of the Organising Secretary.

HON. Mohammed Muwanga Kivumbi
He is 47 years old, Butambala county MP, has served in both 9th and 10th Parliament of Uganda. He made his candidacy to some of his fellow Members of Parliament on DP ticket and some of the opposition MPs mid this week. Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi is currently the Shadow Minister of Defense and Internal Affairs in the 10th Parliament.

Mr. Samuel Walter Lubega Mukaaku
He i a former Uganda Presidential candidate in 2011 Presidential race became the first member of DP bloc to formally declare a 2020 DP President candidacy for the President of the party.

Mr. Mukaaku former Parliamentary candidate in Mawokota South consituency in 2016 on an independent ticket, a principal of DP bloc still faces a hurdle in Article 64 (a) (IV) in the DP consititution, under this Article, Mr. Mukaaku “MUST” apply to the NEC for a waiver or renunciation to be exempted for the said provision ONLY if the NEC deems it in the interest of the Party.

She announced she was joining the race in December,2019 after unsuccessfully petitioning the National Council by moving a motion of vote of no confidence to Dep. Secretary General, Dr. Siranda Gerald Blacks and Dep. National Chairman of the party, Dr. Kiwanuka Mayambala on allegations of corruption, incompetence, illegal conduct and violation of core values and principles of DP.

Brenda announced her candidacy formally in a written statement to the press. “ I’m running for the President of DP to restore credible leadership, have accountability, revamp DP, organize a cohesive membership and focusing the DP to the biggest struggle.

The 40 year old former woman Member of Parliament – Luweero district in the 9th Parliament and the outgoing Uganda Young Democrats President entered the race days to start the party leadership renewal and elections.
