Former speaker of Uganda’s parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga was 30, June 2021 sworn in as an ex-officio member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) in Arusha, Tanzania.

We’ve learnt that the Kamuli Woman legislator who servedĀ for 10-years as Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament and another 10 years as a Deputy Speaker before her recent appointments as 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of East African Community Affairs, will sit in the East Africa Community (EAC) Council of Ministers, the central decision-making and governing organ of the EAC.

In the plenary session chaired by the EALA Assembly Speaker, Ngoga Martin, Kadaga was handed the EALA rules of procedure and a copy of the EAC treaty. The Speaker of the Assembly praised Kadaga as a senior speaker who comes with rich experience in the community.

Mr Ngoga praised Kadaga for always standing firm in international meetings like the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), defending the culture and spirit of Africa, and not entertaining bad western culture.

Kadaga particularly won the hearts of many Ugandans and Africans for her strong stand against homosexuality. Ngoga also said that because of her seniority and experience, she will ably contribute to the development of the community.

Meanwhile, Kadaga told the members of Parliament that she had come back to her routes, a journey she started in 1996 as Minister for Regional Cooperation adding that she believes in the East African community and will ensure that the EAC treaty is implemented effectively.
