President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has written a letter to the Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Kataha Janet Museveni directing her to ensure Makerere University surrenders its land to Baruuli in Nakasongola.

The letter dated 27th November 2023 is titled, “CLAIM OF LAND BY MAKERERE UNIVERSITY COMPRISING OF BLOCK 9B AND 9C TOTALING TO 10 SQUARE MILES UNDER BURULI RANCHING SCHEME NAKASONGOLA.”

According to President Museveni, he has received various petitions from the Baruli that Makerere University is now claiming the land the government had given to them.

President Museveni, citing the injustices the Baruli have been subjected to by the Colonialists and Mengo since 1900, orders the First Lady to allow the Baruli to keep the land.

He also advises her to secure land for Makerere University elsewhere.

In 1989, President Yoweri Museveni instructed the Ministry of Lands and Surveys to allocate 10 square miles of land to enable them to set income-generating activities and education multi-faced agricultural projects.
“By copies of these letters, I direct the Prime Minister and Minister for Lands, Housing and Urban Development to get Makerere University land elsewhere outside Buruli,” the President orders.
