Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, the outgoing Member of Parliament for Butambala and Vice President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) for Buganda region, has been charged with terrorism and remanded in custody until February 3, 2026.

Kivumbi appeared on Friday before the Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Deogratius Ssejjemba.

Upon his appearance, the accused requested time to consult his legal team, prompting the court to grant a one-hour adjournment.

When proceedings resumed, the magistrate ordered that Kivumbi be remanded as police and prosecutors continue with investigations into the case.

The prosecution, led by Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Racheal Bikhole, informed the court that Kivumbi is accused of working with other individuals who are still at large to carry out actions allegedly aimed at intimidating both the government and members of the public for political ends.

According to the state, the alleged activities took place between November 11 and November 17, 2025, in the areas of Kibibi and Gombe within Butambala District. Prosecutors further claimed that the suspects were involved in planning coordinated attacks on Kibibi and Butambala police stations, as well as Electoral Commission offices in the district.

Kivumbi was arrested on Thursday following a wave of election-related violence reported in Butambala District.
The matter is expected to return to court on February 3, 2026, for further mention as investigations continue.
