The government of Uganda will be hosting the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in East Africa at State House Entebbe on January 18, 2024.

According to Vincent Bagiire Waiswa, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the heads of state from member countries will convene for the summit at State House Entebbe to discuss regional peace and security, among other issues.

“The IGAD heads of state with the responsible ministers are to discuss regional peace and security,” he noted.

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in Eastern Africa was created in 1996 to supersede the Intergovernmental Authority on Drought and Development (IGADD) which was founded in 1986 in order to mitigate the effects of the recurring severe droughts and other natural disasters that resulted in widespread famine, ecological degradation and economic hardship in the Horn of Africa.

IGAD is comprised of eight member states, including Uganda, Kenya, Djibouti, Somalia, South Sudan, Ethopia, Sudan, and Eritrea. The previous IGAD summit was held in December 2023.
