A boda boda tax collector has been detained by the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) for allegedly assaulting an officer from the Special Forces Command (SFC). The incident, which occurred last week in Mbale District, has drawn widespread attention following the circulation of a video on social media.

The suspect, identified as Shaban Wesemoyo, reportedly confronted the SFC officer during preparations for President Yoweri Museveni’s convoy. The altercation took place at Nakaloke trading center, commonly referred to as Juba Stage, a critical junction connecting Mbale and Sironko.

According to Col. Deo Akiiki, UPDF’s deputy spokesperson, Wesemoyo faces charges of obstructing presidential security and assaulting an officer performing official duties. “This kind of behavior jeopardizes the safety of the president and national security. It will not be tolerated,” Akiiki stated.

The incident unfolded as the SFC officer worked to clear the road for the presidential convoy en route from Soroti to the Mbale State Lodge. Witnesses and video footage show Wesemoyo accusing the officer of causing a traffic jam by halting vehicles for the convoy. In the footage, Wesemoyo appears to physically attack the officer, escalating the situation.

Col. Akiiki reiterated the critical role of security personnel in ensuring the president’s safe passage. He issued a stern warning to the public against interfering with security operations, highlighting the potential risks posed by such disruptions.

“Security teams are deployed to safeguard the president and facilitate his movements. Any attempts to obstruct their duties will be met with strict action,” Akiiki added.

The UPDF has pledged to investigate the matter thoroughly, underscoring its commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting national security. Wesemoyo remains in custody as legal proceedings continue.
