The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has strongly refuted rumors circulating on social media alleging that 400 human sacrifices are required before the reopening of Karuma Bridge in Northern Uganda. Brigadier General Felix Busizoori, Commander of the UPDF’s 4th Infantry Division, addressed the issue during a press briefing held at the division’s headquarters in Gulu City on November 20, 2024.

“This is nothing but malicious propaganda,” Brig Gen Busizoori stated. He criticized the false claims, which he said are intended to spread fear and disrupt community life in the region. “These rumors are baseless and have no place in our society. We are working tirelessly to track and bring to justice those responsible for spreading such dangerous misinformation.”

The alarming claims have caused widespread unease, affecting farmers, students, and business owners. Many have abandoned their daily activities out of fear, leading to economic disruptions. Brig Gen Busizoori suggested that the falsehoods may be politically motivated, aimed at discrediting the government ahead of upcoming campaigns. “These actions are not only irresponsible but also detrimental to the livelihoods of ordinary citizens,” he added.

Regional Police Commander Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Samuel Asiimwe also spoke on the issue, emphasizing the importance of responsible use of social media. He warned against sharing unverified information that can incite fear and panic. “Social media is a powerful tool, but it’s being misused by some individuals to promote false narratives,” SSP Asiimwe said.

He clarified that there was no evidence of widespread ritual killings in the region, with only one isolated murder case reported in Amuru District. “There is no cause for alarm. Security agencies are monitoring the situation closely to ensure the safety of all residents,” he assured.

The authorities also highlighted how graphic images unrelated to Uganda, purportedly from other African countries, have been used to fuel the rumors. They urged the public to remain calm and refrain from sharing such misleading content. “The security forces are fully in control, and we will not allow misinformation to disrupt the peace and progress of this region,” Brig Gen Busizoori concluded.

The UPDF and police are collaborating to identify and apprehend those behind the rumors, pledging to maintain order as investigations continue. Meanwhile, community leaders and residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to local authorities.
