The Inspectorate of Government (IGG) has arrested seven senior officials attached to Parliament and the Uganda Parliamentary Cooperative Savings and Credit Society (SACCO) as investigations into alleged corruption and financial mismanagement intensify.
The officials were taken into custody on Thursday after appearing at the IGG headquarters in Kampala to record statements. Investigators later detained them and are expected to present them before the Anti-Corruption Court.
Those arrested include Parliament’s Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Chris Obore; Director of Human Resource, Daniel Adilo; Executive Secretary in the Office of the Speaker, Leonard Okema; Principal Research Officer, Rajab Kaaya Ssemalulu; Principal Protocol Officer, Emmanuel Emuron Okwi; Capacity Development Officer, Vincent Otebata; and the Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Parliamentary Cooperative Savings and Credit Society (SACCO), Methods Murebe.
Although the Inspectorate has not yet publicly outlined the specific charges, the arrests are linked to ongoing investigations into the suspected misuse of public funds and alleged irregularities in the management of parliamentary resources.
According to sources familiar with the investigations, the officials had been summoned to assist investigators with statements before they were placed under arrest following questioning.
The latest developments form part of a wider anti-corruption investigation that has already drawn in former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among. In recent weeks, investigators have carried out searches at several properties associated with the former Speaker, seized documents and electronic devices, and impounded vehicles as they gather evidence.
Investigators have also examined offices within Parliament as they seek to establish how public resources were managed and whether any officials abused their positions.
The arrest of senior administrative staff suggests that the investigation is now extending beyond political leaders to include key technical and support personnel within Parliament.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has previously urged the public to allow investigative agencies to complete their work before drawing conclusions on individuals under investigation.
By Thursday afternoon, the suspects remained in custody pending their appearance before the Anti-Corruption Court. Authorities are expected to provide further details once formal charges are filed.
