There are businesses that require little capital but thrive on talent and passion. For Dr. Ssebunya Enock, a medical doctor and portrait artist, both worlds coexist seamlessly.

Dr. Ssebunya, a graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery from Makerere University, has not set aside his artistic passion despite his medical career. Instead, he has built a parallel path through EnockArts, where he practices portrait drawing while also working full-time as a medical doctor.

What kind of business do you do?

I am Dr Ssebunya Enock, a Medical Doctor who earns a living as a portrait Artist as EnockArts.

When did you start doing this business?

I have always loved art since childhood, but my first earnings were from a drawing I made as a Primary four pupil at the Plan Uganda 2004 event, sensitising about witchcraft-driven child sacrifice.

 Why art and craft?

Art and craft have always been an amazing way of capturing people’s memorable events in life.

Did you go to school to do this kind of job?

I am literally a self-taught artist with artworks made since childhood, but glad to have learnt by copying from my Father and other people I saw through my years.

What kind of art and craft do you do?

I mainly draw charcoal and pen on paper media artworks, yet to venture into acrylic paintings.

How much money did you start with?

Literally zero, just a paper and pencil. But while venturing into income-driven artworks, I realised I needed better materials for better quality.

Where did you get that money from?

I would use my personal savings, and later, through the journey, I would request a deposit payment from a client.

How much do you charge to make a piece of art?

Costs depend on the size and finishing of the framed board.

Currently A3 board at 150k, A3 framed at 180k, A2 board at 250k, A2 framed at 300k, and A1 at 450k.

How many days does it take you to finish a piece?

Time duration to completion of an artwork depends on size, with a range from 5hours to a maximum of 3 days.

How many clients do you get in a day?

The artwork business is tricky as a business to offer daily income, but averagely 2 clients per week.

Where do you get the materials you use to make paintings?

I access my artwork materials from different supplies on the famous Nasser Road.

Where are you located?

I am yet to secure my own gallery, so orders and access to my artworks are made with ease online. Through my 10 years of making artwork, 90% orders have been made online.

What challenges do you face in this business?

Artworks as a business is not to be considered for consistent income with the number of clients let alone, but hope for more.

-Quality materials are expensive, resulting in higher costs of final artworks.

-I make artwork deliveries all over the world, with a few instances of delay in packages reaching my clients in different countries.
