KAMPALA, Uganda – Janan Secondary School has announced the upcoming release of The School Influencer, a Ugandan feature film that aims to raise awareness about responsible social media use and the growing influence of digital platforms on young people.

The film follows the story of Nadra, a bright boarding school student who secretly becomes a fast-rising social media influencer. As her online popularity grows, she and her friends are exposed to opportunities and experiences that eventually lead them down a path of difficult choices and life-changing consequences.

According to the school, the production was inspired by the realities facing many learners today, where social media presents both opportunities for growth and significant risks if used irresponsibly.
Speaking about the project, Janan Secondary School Director Mr. Kironde said the film is intended to educate as much as it entertains.

“Social media has become part of everyday life for young people. While it offers tremendous opportunities for learning, creativity and entrepreneurship, it also presents challenges that require guidance from parents, teachers and society. We believe film is an effective way to engage young people and encourage them to make informed decisions,” he said.

Unlike conventional awareness campaigns, The School Influencer uses storytelling to address issues including peer pressure, online safety, cyberbullying, digital responsibility and the pursuit of online fame. The school says the film encourages young people to use social media positively while remaining focused on education, personal development and good character.

Following its premiere, the film will be screened in schools and other educational institutions across Uganda as part of a nationwide awareness campaign. The screenings will be accompanied by discussions involving students, teachers and parents on responsible social media use, digital citizenship and online safety.
Mr. Kironde said the initiative reflects the school’s commitment to preparing learners for life beyond the classroom.
“Education today is about more than academic excellence. It is also about equipping young people with the values, skills and judgment they need to navigate an increasingly digital world responsibly,” he said.

Janan Secondary School believes the campaign will contribute to national efforts to promote safe online behaviour while encouraging constructive conversations about the role of technology in education and youth development.
The School Influencer is expected to premiere later this year, with the official release date to be announced.
