The State Minister for Lands Persis Namuganza has picked nomination forms to challenge Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga as the second National Vice Chairperson of the Ruling National Resistance Movement. Min.Namuganza says she intends to drive the youth agenda and mobilize for the party if elected to the position.
This will be a major showdown as the two have a history of rivalry stemming from disagreements over who should hold power in Busoga Kingdom.
The rift became more conspicuous in 2018 when Kadaga along with Busoga King Gabula Nadiope installed Christopher Mutyaba as a chief of Bukono, where Namuganza hails from without her knowledge.
After picking the nomination forms on Wednesday at NRM party head quarters, Min.Namuganza told journalists that it is high time for the youths to take over affairs of the ruling party.
“The elders should continue to advise and guide us but we must fill these positions as youths so they can be in the backyard and guide us.”she said.
She added”Young people should participate actively in democracy and party activities. I am here to raise their voices and as they participate in decision making of the party ”
According to the NRM party’s election roadmap, the only positions that will be subjected to the process of elections are; the national chairperson, the first national vice chairperson, the second national vice chairperson (female) and the six regional vice chairpersons.
The current holders of these top nine positions in NRM are President Museveni who is the national chairperson, deputised by Moses Kigongo as first national vice chairperson and Kadaga as the second national vice chairperson.
