Uganda Police Force with sister security organs have arrested private Justus Turyatunga, an officer who on Tuesday announced his affiliation to Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) party.

Turyatunga stormed NUP offices in Kamwokya donning in a UPDF uniform and a red People Power beret. In his short announcement, he claimed to have seen the ‘light’ in Bobi Wine’s party.

With Uganda’s law being clear that UPDF and Police must not participate in partisan politics, the deputy army spokesperson Brig. Flavia Byekwaso vowed that Turyatunga was to be arrested and apprehended for his actions.

Byekwaso said, UPDF had launched investigations into an incident where a man was captured in a video wearing an army uniform, professing to have joined the National Unity Platform (NUP)/people power.

In a tweet, Byekwaso said the UPDF is not a partisan army.

Byekwaso said; “A picture of an unidentified individual in UPDF dress, with unclear name tag and covered shoulder lapels and with a people power beret and mask was posted on social media to cheaply and desperately portray some members of the force as partisan.

The UPDF takes strong exception to this criminal scheme and already investigations are underway to establish the identity and apprehend the culprit who is not a member of the UPDF.”

The video, which went viral on social media, shows a man in an army uniform claiming that he has joined NUP, a political party that is being headed by Kyadondo East Member of Parliament, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.

NUP is the political wing of the People Power movement.
