The Nabweru Chief Magistrates court has sentenced to 17 years, the man who murdered a nurse at International Hospital in Kampala(IHK)
Violet Kakai, 35, a nurse at IHK was hit several times with an axe by her husband, Simon Shimanya, a teacher by profession following a long standing domestic wrangle.
On Tuesday, Patricia Amoko, the Nabweru Chief Magistrate said since Shimanya had pleaded guilty on his own plea,it was prudent for court to be lenient to him.
She therefore noted that the 17 year sentence starting with the day of sentence is enough for the convict.
“He is a middle aged man of 46 years with children left behind by the deceased to take care of. It is therefore not true that he cannot reform and return to take care of the children who have already lost one parent,”Amoko said.
The magistrate however noted that Shimanya is free to appeal against the sentence in 14 days time.
The convict was arrested on August 12 from Isingiro District where he was hiding for almost two weeks after the gruesome incident on the night of August,1,2020 at the couple’s home in Bbumbu –Kiteezi, Wakiso District. where the murder incident reportedly took place on the night of August 1 this year.
When he was arrested,Shimanya admitted to the gruesome act but said that for a long time he had suspected his wife of having an affair with one Robert Sebuufu.
He told detectives that on the fateful day, Sebuufu dropped Kakai home and in tried to hit him(Sebuufu) the deceased intervened and he accidentally axed her to death.JN
