Frustrated: Makerere Scientists To Sue University For Rejecting Their Admission

A group of twenty(20) Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery graduates of 2019 have appealed against Makerere University administration decision to reject their respective application for entry into the 3rd year MBChB programme for 2020/2021 academic entry .

Through their lawyer Isaac Ssemakadde of Centre for Legal aid have even threatened to sue the University over failure to issue their academic transcripts close to ten months after their graduation.

The grieved graduates led by Ssengendo Geofrey, Kuteesa Jonathan, Echodu Collins, Kasumba Moses, Mayanja David Nsubuga, Ssenyondo Jovan, Kwikiriza Gyavira, Odeke Joseph, Adong Martha, Masaba Wabulo Davis, Sesanga Misha Shalom, Opoka Travor, Muwana Asuman, Asaba Isaac, Mafabi Mathias, Ojok Robert, !yule Ian, Sepunya Ronald claim that they have lost out on numerous opportunities because of the unreasonably long delay that has left them frustrated.

“We have lost very many opportunities. we are now jobless because the University can’t process transcripts.”they said.

Counsel Ssemakadde revealed that the reason why his clients have instructed him to engage university senate is because they acted arbitrarily, unlawfully, unjustly, unfairly and unreasonably when they excluded his clients from the admission list of 12 November 2020 for the said MBChB programme, contrary to the established the policy and practice of admitting all BSB graduates with second Lower in to 3rd Year of the MBChB programme as upheld by the court decision in Namusoke Moureen & 7 others. “This decision has been consistently followed by the university in AY 2017/18 and 2019/20. Why the sudden change now?” he asked?.
He adds “We are therefore instructed to notify you, as we hereby that if this issue is not resolved amicably and expeditiously, but at any rate not later than 15 December, 2020, our clients shall take legal action against the university immediately, without giving further notice”
Ssemakadde vowed that if the university management doesn’t resolve the raised matters amicably in given period, he will have not option but to drag them to court of law.

Efforts to talk to Makerere university administration were futile as none of the spokespersons was willing to comment on the matter.
