Renowned Ugandan tennis star Cedric Babu, who is the president of the Uganda Tennis Association, has entered into a partnership with tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia’s Kabira Country Club in a bid to promote tennis talent in Uganda.
Following the recent victories registered by sportsmen like athletics gold champion Joshua Cheptegei, Uganda Cranes star Dennis Onyango and other sportsmen, Kabira Country Club, renowned for its world class sporting facilities, is supporting youth sports by availing these facilities to children in order to make a difference in the youth sports community.
Under this partnership, Kabira Country Club opened its gates to three Ugandan tennis players from Uganda’s Under-12 (U-12) team who have qualified to compete in the Africa Junior tennis Championships set to be held in Morocco this December.
The trio’s qualification comes after Uganda won the regional tennis championships in which U-12 tennis players from Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania and Uganda competed.
The three players representing Uganda at these Championships are Byaruhanga Ambrose, 10 years of age and Tony Blair Oweknimungu and Ssendyowa Abdul Latif who are both 12 years old.
The Uganda Tennis Association president, Babu, was very pleased by Kabira Country Club’s support.
He said this is a major step in making tennis more accessible to all Ugandans.
“My interest lies in developing the tennis fraternity from the grassroots to the international level. So we appreciate the opportunity we were given to train for free at Kabira Country Club by the Ruparelia family,” Mr. Babu said.
The Ruparelia Group of Companies has played a key role in building, promoting, and advancing tennis in Uganda.
It should be noted that in June this year, the Ruparelia Group supported the All National Junior Open Tennis Championships, where juniors from the under eight, U-10, U-12 and U-14 categories competed for ascendancy at finals staged a competition at Kabira Country Club.
The Ruparelia Group’s Director, Ms. Sheena Ruparelia, said the Group’s interest lies in developing Uganda’s future generation.
“We support the young generation since they are the ones who shall invent the future. So we are happy to extend our help to these youthful tennis players,” Ms. Ruparelia said.
