Speaker Among,DRC MPs Seek Stronger Ties In Trade & Security

In a significant effort to deepen regional cooperation, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among hosted a delegation of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) legislators to discuss critical issues of trade and security. The discussions emphasized the need for peace as a foundation for economic growth and regional integration.

Speaker Among underscored the importance of addressing the persistent insecurity in Eastern DRC, which continues to hinder trade and development. “We are committed to enhancing cross-border trade, but peace and security must be prioritized. Without peace, economic progress remains unattainable,” she noted.

She called for stronger collaboration between the parliaments of Uganda and the DRC, highlighting the role of lawmakers in promoting stability and prosperity. “As representatives of the people, it is our duty to ensure that they live in peace and have the freedom to engage in economic activities without fear,” she added.

The head of the DRC delegation, Hon. Lambert Mende, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for parliamentary diplomacy to strengthen the relationship between the two nations. “Parliament must be at the forefront of fostering cooperation and good neighborliness. Establishing a DRC–Uganda friendship group would further enhance our efforts toward peace and mutual growth,” he proposed.

Mende also stressed the urgency of resolving the ongoing conflict in Eastern DRC, describing its devastating impact on communities in the region. “The conflict poses a significant challenge, and we must act swiftly to alleviate the suffering of those affected,” he urged.

The meeting, attended by Uganda’s Minister of State for Education and Sports (Sports), Hon. Peter Ogwang, and Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesige Kasaija, concluded with a commitment to enhance legislative cooperation and explore strategies for promoting stability and economic development between the two countries.
