Uganda,Rwanda Urged To Boost Cross-Border Trade For Regional Prosperity

Ambassadors from Uganda and Rwanda have called for the promotion of cross-border trade as a catalyst for regional development and stronger bilateral ties. During the Kampala-Kigali Expo on January 26, 2025, Uganda’s Ambassador to Rwanda, Adonia Ayebare, emphasized the importance of establishing policies that simplify and enhance trade between the two countries.

“Cross-border trade is not just about economic growth; it’s a foundation for lasting peace and unity in our region. Prioritizing its development will create opportunities for our grassroots entrepreneurs, who are the backbone of sustainable economic progress,” Ayebare stated.

The call to action comes as Uganda and Rwanda work to mend past tensions that disrupted trade and cooperation in the Great Lakes region. Cross-border trade, particularly in agricultural products and small-scale goods, has long been a lifeline for many communities in both nations.

Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Ismael Baguma, echoed Ayebare’s sentiments and committed to addressing obstacles that hinder trade. “We must eliminate barriers such as high tariffs, restrictive policies, and delays at border points to unlock the full potential of our economic partnership. This is essential for achieving inclusive and transformative growth,” Baguma said.

The Kampala-Kigali Expo served as a platform for business leaders and policymakers to discuss strategies to enhance trade relations. Entrepreneurs from both countries showcased their products, highlighting the role of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in advancing regional integration.

Experts at the event called for investment in infrastructure, such as roads and border facilities, to facilitate smoother trade. They also emphasized the need for harmonized regulations to reduce bottlenecks.

As Uganda and Rwanda deepen their cooperation, stakeholders remain hopeful that a renewed focus on trade will strengthen ties and foster shared prosperity in the region.
