Uganda Airlines Suspends Flights To Kinshasa Amid Violent Protests

Uganda Airlines has temporarily suspended its flights to Kinshasa following violent protests that erupted in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The unrest, which targeted foreign embassies, was sparked by growing frustration over the escalating conflict in Goma and the perceived inaction of the international community.

Protesters took to the streets, blocking roads, burning tires, and vandalizing diplomatic missions. The embassies of the United States, France, and Uganda were among those attacked, with the Ugandan embassy reportedly set on fire and looted. The situation became more volatile as explosions were heard near the Rwandan embassy and the U.S. consular offices.

In response to the chaos, Kinshasa’s governor, Daniel Bumba Lubaki, announced a ban on all protests in the city, although plans for a peaceful march remained in place. Police commander Blaise Kilimbalimba urged demonstrators to maintain order, warning of serious consequences for those inciting violence.

Meanwhile, fighting continued in Goma, where M23 rebels have launched an offensive since Sunday. The rebels have reportedly taken control of key areas near the airport, escalating tensions further. As the conflict intensifies, the United Nations has begun evacuating non-essential personnel from Goma to Kampala as a precautionary measure.

The African Union condemned the violence and urged the M23 to lay down their arms and respect the August 2024 ceasefire agreement. UN Secretary-General António Guterres also called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, emphasizing the need for dialogue.

With over 400,000 people displaced since the beginning of 2025, the crisis in eastern DRC continues to worsen, prompting international concern and urgent calls for a peaceful resolution.
