Sheena Ruparelia: The Invisible Architect of Ruparelia Group Growth, Expansion and Dominance for Years

Sheena Ruparelia, the daughter of Ugandan Billionaire Dr Sudhir Ruparelia has emerged as a key figure in driving the Ruparelia Group’s global engagement and philanthropic initiatives, seamlessly blending business leadership with social impact.

Her strategic oversight in hospitality and real estate has elevated Uganda’s standing in the international business landscape and contributed significantly to national development.

During Uganda’s 39th National Resistance Movement (NRM) Liberation Day celebrations in Mubende District on January 26, 2025, President Museveni honoured Ms Sheena with a national medal for her instrumental role in successfully hosting the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and G77+China summits.

As a Director of the Ruparelia Group, she was commended for having played a pivotal role in the construction and operational management of the Speke Resort Convention Centre in Munyonyo, the primary venue for these high-profile summits.

Sheenah’s meticulous oversight ensured that the facility met world-class standards, earning commendations from international delegates and positioning Uganda as a premier destination for global conferences.

She may prefer to stay out of the limelight, but behind the scenes, lies a determined business leader. Within the Ruparelia Group, Sheena champions growth across hospitality, real estate, and philanthropy, balancing innovation with tradition while supporting her father, Dr Sudhir, in managing Uganda’s largest business conglomerate.

Background and Education

Born on December 23, 1988, Sheena is the second daughter of Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, one of Africa’s most prominent businessmen. She pursued her early education at Kabira International School in Kampala before attending St. Helens High School in London. She later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Accountancy from City University, London.

Journey within the Ruparelia Group

After completing her education, Sheena returned to Uganda and began her career at Crane Bank Limited, a former subsidiary of the Ruparelia Group, starting as a cashier before rising to the position of Business Development Manager.

With the bank’s closure in 2016, Sheena transitioned to Meera Investments, the real estate arm of the group, where she now serves as a Director.

At Meera, she oversees the group’s expansive hospitality and real estate portfolio, managing flagship properties such as Speke Resort and Kabira Country Club while spearheading major projects like Speke Apartments Kitante and Bukoto Living.

“I believe in fostering a collaborative environment that enables us to modernise systems, enhance operational standards, and build a motivated team united by a shared sense of purpose. By balancing tradition with innovation, I aim to further build a resilient, forward-thinking business that upholds the Ruparelia Group’s legacy while adapting to market changes,” she once told CEO Magazine.

“Ultimately, my goal is to drive long-term success that benefits not only our organisation but also contributes to Uganda’s economic and social transformation.”

Philanthropic Endeavors

Beyond corporate leadership, Sheena is deeply committed to philanthropy. As a member of the Board of Trustees of the Ruparelia Foundation, she champions initiatives aimed at empowering underprivileged children in rural areas. Her work has been instrumental in transforming the lives of orphans across various communities, reflecting her passion for social change and community development.

Personal Life

Sheena is married to Jay Sakaria, a Director under Gold Star Insurance Company Ltd. The two wedded in a lavish ceremony held at London’s prestigious Savoy Hotel, followed by a grand reception at the Dorchester Hotel. The couple has since been blessed with two daughters, further enriching the Ruparelia family’s legacy.

Lasting Legacy and Impact

Sheena Ruparelia’s journey—from her early days in the family business to her current leadership roles—epitomises a fusion of inherited entrepreneurial vision and personal ambition. Her contributions to Uganda’s infrastructure, global engagement, and philanthropic initiatives underscore her unwavering commitment to national progress.

Sheena’s recognition at the NRM Liberation Day celebrations is a testament to her impact in shaping Uganda’s contemporary business and social landscape, reinforcing her status as a key architect of the Ruparelia Group’s continued success.
