JEEMA In Crisis As Kyamundu Plots For Overthrow Of Basalirwa

The Justice Forum (JEEMA) party is grappling with an internal leadership crisis as tensions rise over the prolonged tenure of its president, Asuman Basalirwa. Party spokesperson Ssentongo Kyamundu has announced plans to convene a delegates’ conference in July 2025 to facilitate Basalirwa’s removal, citing his refusal to relinquish power despite the expiration of his term in July 2024.

Speaking at a press conference held on March 17, 2025, at the party’s headquarters in Mengo, Kyamundu expressed dissatisfaction with Basalirwa’s leadership, accusing him of clinging to power and failing to organize elections for new leaders. According to Kyamundu, Basalirwa’s extended stay at the helm of the party has stalled progress and hindered the emergence of fresh leadership within JEEMA.

Basalirwa, who took over the party’s presidency in 2010, was expected to oversee a transition last year but did not initiate the necessary processes. This failure has sparked unrest among party members, many of whom believe the lack of leadership change has contributed to JEEMA’s inability to expand its influence beyond a single parliamentary seat.

Kyamundu highlighted growing discontent among party supporters, particularly the youth, who are demanding new leadership to reinvigorate JEEMA’s political standing. He further accused Basalirwa of neglecting party affairs, failing to engage with the secretariat, and avoiding visits to the headquarters actions that have raised concerns about his commitment to the party’s future.

Additionally, critics within JEEMA have accused the leadership of fostering internal divisions and suppressing potential successors. There are concerns that Basalirwa’s prolonged rule is motivated by a desire to maintain control, rather than a commitment to the party’s growth.

Kyamundu called upon JEEMA members to rally behind efforts to organize a transparent and democratic leadership transition, emphasizing that the upcoming delegates’ conference will be a crucial step toward revitalizing the party. As the conflict unfolds, all eyes are on whether Basalirwa will resist these mounting pressures or step aside to allow for new leadership within JEEMA.
