The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have arrested its serving army officer after a video of him slapping a civilian went viral on social media.
“UPDF has noted with concern a circulating video of one of our soldiers acting out of order against a civilian,” said army spokesperson Brig Gen Flavia Byekwaso on Thursday.

The soldier who is not yet named is seen reprimanding a civilian who is on his knees begging for mercy.
The soldier then slaps the man, throwing the mask off his face.
“Be careful,” he warns as his colleagues entreat him to leave the man and continue on the journey.
Still shouting, the soldier once again bangs the man on the head, throwing him down.
The man tries to run away but the soldier catches up with him and continues slapping and kicking him.
According to Brig. Gen. Flavia Byekwaso, the soldier has been arrested and action will be taken against him.
“UPDF remains a people’s army & does not condone such individual barbaric acts against Wanainchi,” she added.
