As the year draws to a close, law enforcement authorities report a surge in cases of cattle theft nationwide, with even President Museveni’s farm falling victim to such incidents.
The escalating demand for livestock has driven thieves to target one of the state farms in Kisozi, Gomba district, according to information disclosed by the Uganda Police Force during an update on crime and security.
Hadija Namutebi, the Chief Political Commissar of the Uganda Police Force, emphasized the increasing trend of cattle theft and urged both the police and communities in cattle-keeping areas to remain vigilant.
Namutebi, in her press report, shared details about a specific incident that occurred on November 16 in Gomba at New Farm, a branch of Kisozi State Farm in Kifampa Sub County.
Unknown individuals stole and drove away 10 heads of cattle from President Museveni’s farm to an unknown destination. She noted, “With the help of our canine department, we have arrested three suspects identified as; Julius Asiimwe, Muhamood Tibaijuka, and Innocent Umusiima.”
Despite the arrest of the suspects, the ten heads of cattle remain unrecovered. Namutebi assured that ongoing investigations are in progress and appealed to the residents of Gomba to assist the police by sharing crucial information.
In Tororo district, three separate incidents were recorded, resulting in the recovery of four cows and the arrest of two suspects, thanks to collaborative efforts between the police and the community.
Similarly, in Kyegegwa on November 16, at Bulingo village, thieves made off with 29 heads of cattle from the kraal of Andrew Kawuma. They intended to sell the cattle at a playground. Prompted by the police, a search was conducted, leading to the arrest of two suspects, Richard Arinaitwe and Alex Baguma, who were apprehended at Wekomeire playground with all the stolen cattle.
Namutebi assured the country that the Anti Stock Theft Unit and the police, in general, will maintain their responsiveness to distress calls related to cattle thefts.
