Kawalya Defeats FDC’s Nyanjura To Win KCCA Speakership

The Lubaga North councilor, Abubakar Kawalya has won the polls for the election of the pioneer speaker of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).

He was declared winner by the Buganda Road Chief magistrate, Miriam Ayo Okello who presided over the polls. According to Ayo, Kawalya polled 17 votes beating his rival and Makerere University councilor, Doreen Nyanjura who garnered 14 votes.

Kawalya, who belongs to the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party contested as an independent while Nyanjura, who belongs in the same party ran on the party flag.

The Kawempe Division councilor, Muhammad Segirinya polled one vote (his own). According to Ayo, all the 32 votes cast by the councilors were valid. She congratulated Ayo upon his election.

Meanwhile the other election, Musa Mbazira is speaker Lubaga Division council. He polled 27 votes beating his rival, Henry Lutwama who managed 19 votes.

In Kawempe Division Onesmas Mutumba emerged winner with 31 votes followed by Stephen Mungi in second position with 16 votes. The positions of speaker and deputy speaker at KCCA and respective city divisions were introduced by the KCCA Amendment Act 2019.
