The Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) has joined several Ugandans to receive great news when confederation of African Football (CAF) declared that AFCON 2027 will be hosted by three East Africa countries;Uganda,Kenya and Tanzania.
While addressing the media at Uganda House,UPC spokesperson Sharon Ayat Arach revealed that this is a great opportunity for the region as it is going to be a show case of potential, culture, and tourism industry which needs to be tapped in very much.
“This is an opportunity for Uganda to be marketed across the globe”,she said.
However for Uganda, it is an uphill task as at the moment, Uganda cannot host any international football match as our stadia are not to the standards of CAF and Federation of international Football Association (FIFA).
UPC says apart from stadia, government still needs to develop infrastructure especially public transport, widen and damaged narrow roads are a source of traffic jam in and outside our cities.
Ayat wants Public health and hygiene improved to required levels, the water and sewerage system be given adequate maintenance and stop garbage littering in towns and trading centres.
“All this calls for urgent massive infrastructure development before 2027 which is within our reach. Short of that, will be a tall order for Uganda to raise a competing national team ready to go all the way from group stages to knock out stages up to finals save for the country
having a hosting status”,she noted.
UPC has also advised the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) to identify talents from Outside Premier League clubs to competitions like FUFA Drum, Clan Tournaments, Masaza cup, University Leagues and other lower Schools tournaments.
