Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the death of Jacob Akansasira, a 40-year-old IT specialist at Kyambogo University. Akansasira, a resident of Kiwatule in Kampala, succumbed to injuries sustained in a mob attack in Namugongo.
According to police spokesperson Rusoke Kituma, the incident began on December 1, 2024, when Akansasira and his family stayed overnight in Kyebando. That morning, at around 8:00 a.m., he reportedly left to purchase groceries but did not return to the guest house until the evening of December 2.
Tragically, his wife received a call from a boda-boda rider informing her that Akansasira had been beaten near the Catholic Shrine in Namugongo and was in critical condition. He was rushed to Angelina Medical Centre and later referred to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he died on December 11 due to the severity of his injuries.
Police investigations revealed that Akansasira was attacked in a ghetto area of Buloli Zone, Namugongo Division, where he was allegedly mistaken for a thief. Preliminary findings suggest that a mob lynched him in an act of vigilante violence.
On December 13, law enforcement officials arrested four individuals believed to have participated in the attack. Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend additional suspects involved in the incident.
The police have condemned the mob justice and called on the public to report suspected crimes to authorities rather than taking matters into their own hands. The suspects are expected to face charges as investigations continue.
