Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has announced the acquisition of a new landfill in Buyala, located along the Kampala-Mityana Road. The 200-acre site will not only serve as a waste disposal facility but also host a state-of-the-art processing plant designed to convert waste into valuable products. The initiative is part of the authority’s efforts to modernize waste management and prevent future disasters.
Frank Rusa, addressing city cleaners during an end-of-year celebration, emphasized the importance of the new facility in addressing the city’s waste challenges and improving public health standards.
This development follows the tragic collapse of the Kiteezi landfill earlier this year, which claimed the lives of more than 30 individuals. Former KCCA leaders, including ex-Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka, former Deputy Director David Luyimbaazi, and ex-Public Health Head Daniel Okello, were recently granted bail after being charged with manslaughter in connection with the incident. The trio faces 57 charges for their alleged negligence leading to the disaster.
The new landfill in Buyala is expected to play a pivotal role in ensuring sustainable waste management for Kampala, marking a significant step forward after the devastating Kiteezi collapse.
