UPDF Officer Tragically Takes Own Life In Mpigi

A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer has died by suicide, sparking renewed conversations about mental health challenges within the
armed forces.

The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon in Nakirebe, a location between Wakiso and Mpigi districts.

According to initial reports, the officer, identified as RO/13999 Lt. Amon Ariho from the UPDF Engineering Brigade, arrived at local football field in a black
vehicle, registration number UBF 493Q.

Eyewitnesses said the officer asked the players to vacate the field before retrieving a rifle from his car and ending his life.The tragic act occurred around
2:00 PM.

Deputy Defence Spokesperson,Colonel Deo Akiiki, confirmed the development in a press briefing, expressing profound
sorrow over the loss.
“Our officers and local law enforcement swiftly secured the Scene and retrieved personal items from the vehicle,
including the deceased’s phone and documents,” said Akiiki.

The officer’s remains were transported to Mulago Mortuary,while the firearm and vehicle were handed over to Mpigi
Police for further investigation.

This heartbreaking event has once again highlighted the importance of addressing mental health within the UPDF.

Though statistics on similar incidents remain scarce, the military has acknowledged past occurrences and emphasized ongoing efforts to improve
psychological support for its personnel.

In recent years, the UPDF has taken steps to bolster mental health services, deploying counseling and psychosocial
teams to different units in a bid to curb stress-related challenges.
