The Democratic Party (DP) has embarked on internal sensitization of its members across the country about the cooperation agreement after the home coming party that was held in Northern Uganda on Saturday, July 22, 2023.
The Deputy President of the party, Fred Mukasa Mbidde, during a press conference held at City House in Kampala on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, revealed that as a Party, they have chosen to traverse the whole country lecturing masses to understand the objectives of cooperation agreement with National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
“One thing we must tell the country is the test of good governance is in its results. We have held elections six times but every time we hold elections, opposition politicians are either on police bond or running up and down for their dear lives,” Mbidde noted.
Adding, “That means, the laws should be amended so that the power of biasness can be extinguished from the NRM or opposition. So, those are some of the issues that DP is working on in the cooperation agreement with the NRM government.”
He said that, it is the first of its kind in Uganda that NRM has entered into an agreement of cooperation with an opposition party for purposes of setting up clear path for Uganda, emphasizing that, civil education is material and needed among Ugandans as the country is getting into broader peace agenda.
Mbidde noted that as DP, they are going to engage other political parties for dialogue and discussion.
He said that, before the December elections, they will explain in details about the cooperation agreement, but if Members of Parliament (MPs) still insist on not embracing the ideology, the party will let them walk away.
He stressed that DP will fire its errant MPs who do not understand its mission.
This follows the DP MPs insisting that the July 2022, NRM-DP cooperation agreement that was signed between President Museveni who is also the Chairperson of the ruling NRM Party and DP President Norbert Mao was for the two individuals but does not represent the party as a whole.
Mbidde noted that they are continuing with the campaign, adding that in a short time, they will head to the Eastern parts of the country and later to other regions.
He said that, it is a pity that some of the DP MPs have decided not to understand the motive of the agreement.
Mbidde advised members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party to settle and dialogue if they want the party to unite and move forward.
In the 42-clause agreement that was signed in July 2022, the two parties not only agreed to share political power, but also to foster constitutionalism and respect of human rights.
According to the agreement, DP accepted to cooperate with NRM in supporting the overall governance agenda and supporting parliamentary votes on matters of confidence and supply for the full term (2021-2026) of the 11th Parliament.
