Uganda Peoples Congress ‘UPC’ has urged the Government and Political Parties to fully discuss the question of delayed elections and see how best resources can be secured to finance the entire Independent Electoral Commission roadmap.
While addressing the press conference on Wednesday at Uganda house,UPC head of communication Faizo Muzeyi revealed that there is a need to be better focused and decisive on issues that are to do with democracy and governance. “It very much clear that all our local and national leadership is derived from people’s choices and covering a specific period of office. Any delays should be connected to more serious issues like natural disasters but not necessarily lack of resources. As we prepare for 2025/2026 General Elections”,he said.
UPC also demanded for electoral reforms that can ease the campaigns and polling ahead of 2026 elections.
Muzeyi said that for instance political Parties with representation in parliament are assisted through the treasury to facilitate some of their day-to-day activities.
Section 14 A (b) of Political Parties and Organisations Act as amended, “in respect of elections, Government shall finance political organisations and parties on equal basis has never been implemented”, Muzeyi explained.
UPC has implored the Government and Political Parties to fully discuss the question of delayed elections and see how best resources can be secured to finance the entire Independent Electoral Commission roadmap. “We need to be better focused and decisive on issues that are to do with democracy and governance. It is very much clear that all our local and national leadership is derived from people’s choices and covering a specific period of office. Any delays should be connected to more serious issues like natural disasters but not necessarily lack of resources. As we prepare for 2025/2026 General Elections”,he said.
Mr Muzeyi encouraged all key stakeholders to refocus on this and proceed decisively as the move to improve our electoral processes.
UPC has also welcomed the reconstruction and rehabilitation of some of the city roads and drainage channels in Makindye Division by Government ahead of the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and G-77 Summits at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort Hotel.
However, responding and planning for only specific events when our people are losing both lives and property due to bad roads is a poor idea.
UPC has also urged the government to continue with the road repairs in Kampala and not only necessarily for the said Summit purposes, which repairs should be extended to up-country as roads are vital links to communication and service delivery.
“Any impassable road or damaged bridges is a real challenge to trade and movements of people thus the need to be focused and decisive as we move on with 2024”,he narrated.
UPC has called upon the administrations of all categories of learning institutions to be highly compassionate and accept payment of dues in instalments as learners report back to school.
