Why Over 1,400 Candidates Were Ordered To Repeat Senior Six

Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has ordered over 1,433 candidates to repeat senior six after they failed to obtain any principle pass in the 2019 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Examination (UACE), according to the results released on Thursday February 27 2019.

While releasing the exam results at the Office of the President in Kampala, the Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) executive secretary, Mr Daniel Odongo said that out of the 103,301 candidates who sat for the exams, 101,868 have been able to obtain a principal pass during the exams.

“A total of 1,433 candidates have not been able to obtain any principle pass, hence they obtained F and are supposed to repeat,” he said.

According to the results, a total of 38,737 obtained three principle passes, 26,986 have obtained two principle passes and 23,327 have obtained one principle pass while a total of 12,828 have obtained a subsidiary.

However, Mr Odongo said on Thursday that an analysis of the overall candidates performance in the examination show that a very high percentage of candidates (98.6) qualified for an award of UACE.

According to him, the failure rate is 1.4 percent similar to that of 2018.

Poor performance in science subjects, especially biology continues to raise concern among officials of the Uganda National Examination board (UNEB).

Releasing the the 2019 exams results in Kampala today, the board chairperson, Prof Mary Okwakol said the results indicate that there’s a better performance in 2019 than that of 2018.
“However, entry for science subjects are quite low. Biology continues to be a cause of concern.
In the last 4 years, less than 50 percent of the candidates obtained passes at principle level,” she said.

She said the board introduced new measures to enhance the accuracy of data capture. Each candidates score was captured twice to detect and eliminate any discrepancies.

“UNEB received an award of excellence presented by NITA Uganda for its outstanding e-service in the education sector. The board continues to be conscious of the needs of learners with various forms of disability and learning challenges,” Ms Okwakol said.

She also said registration fees have remained the same as for 2019 that is Shs 34,000 for PLE, Shs 164,000 for UCE and Shs 186,000 for UACE.
