MPs Ssegirinya, Ssewanyana Denied Bail Again, Remanded Further

The high court in Masaka has for the second time refused to grant bail to two Opposition MPs Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya (Kawempe North) and Allan Ssewanyana (Makindye West).

Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana currently detained over Murder, Terrorism, and Attempted Murder charges were seeking to be released on bail again after they were rearrested early this month on the same charges.

Presiding over the court sitting on Monday morning, the Masaka high court judge, Justice Lawrence Tweyanze said the MPs cannot be granted bail on grounds that they were a flight risk and could disrupt the ongoing investigations.

Citing pleadings from the State Prosecution, Justice Tweyanze noted that it had been duly proven that the suspects were likely to interfere with the ongoing investigations and probably abscond from the court once released on bail.

Regarding the medical concerns raised by the MPs, the Judge tasked the Prison Authorities at Kigo to ensure that the MPs receive the necessary treatment.

The MPs who subscribe to the National Unity Platform (NUP) were arrested last month in connection to the panga-wielding killings that marred the greater sub-region districts of Masaka, Gomba, Kalungu and Lwengo.

The denial of their bail comes at a time when President Museveni is pushing hard to see court bail for murder suspects and other capital offenders scrapped off.
