Fika Salama: 391 Drivers Arrested Over Traffic Offences In Intensified Police Operations

The spokesperson of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, Michael Kananura, while addressing a press conference at Naguru, Kampala, on September 4, 2023, said that 391 drivers were arrested in the Fika Salama extra operation for the period between August 27, to September 2, 2023.

“We have so far arrested 391 drivers in the Fika Salama extra operation who were captured by CCTV cameras for driving beyond the speed limit along Kampala Express Way,” he said.

According to Kananura, out of the 391 drivers, 10 refused to stop, but the rest were all issued an express penalty.

Kananura said that the 10 drivers who refused to stop were all charged with the offenses of driving beyond the prescribed speed limit and failing to comply with the directives of the police officer.

“The vehicles have been blacklisted, and their drivers are required to come and report to Natete police traffic headquarters in room 73 for their penalties, and if they fail to do so, they will be traced, arrested, and taken to court,” he added.

“A case in point is the driver of motor vehicle UBN 742G, a Range Rover, who was driving at a speed of 174 km per hour on the Express Highway which is beyond the prescribed speed limit, and failed to stop on August 31, 2023, at 11:56 am,” he said.

He added that they have all the evidence with them in regard to the matter, and they expect the driver to appear or else he will be arrested and taken to court.

According to the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, 12 people per day, on average, die in road accidents. It is against this background that the directorate, in partnership with other stakeholders, launched Operation Fika Salama Extra.
